About me

Graduating Class:
1972
Degree:
BA
Bio:

Since 1994, I have focused on early stage companies, as a private equity investor, board member, advisor and manager.  I played a key role in nine startup companies.  Principally through Sun & Co., I have personally invested in thirteen others, with nine currently in the portfolio. I am a Director of the Mississippi Technology Alliance and have been a director of numerous companies, including TerraCycle (named “Coolest Little Startup in America” by Inc. magazine).  I was named Angel Investor of the year in 2006 by New Vantage/Active Angel Investors.  I led four private equity investments aggregating $230 million in startup and high growth companies in Asia and Africa.

Rich has been an investment banker with Goldman Sachs, CSFB (now Credit Suisse), and UBS.  Since 1980, I have originated, structured, placed and negotiated over 70 transactions valued at over $4 billion and led over 30 advisory assignments valued at over $7 billion, including private equity, debt, and tax-oriented investments, venture capital, workouts and bankruptcies, mergers, project finance and leasing.  After a politics major at Princeton magna cum laude, I earned an MBA in finance and international business from New York University and became a CFA charterholder in 2006.

About my company:

Through Sun & Co., I help early stage, high-growth companies and entrepreneurs surmount their challenges and reach their full potential.  I have an extensive record of success with 30 early stage companies as a consultant, interim executive, angel investor, and board member (Advisory Board or Board of Directors) and in innovative financing as an institutional  private equity investor and an investment banker (Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and UBS).

I am particularly active in cleantech and energy.  My record of success and skills with early-stage companies, complex private and project finance, and experience in the last energy boom-and-bust combine to make me unusually well qualified to help those companies surmount two of their greatest challenges: slow adoption by their customers and the enormous funds often required to scale up and deploy their technologies.
